About the Genesis Prize Women’s Empowerment Challenge
For Organizations and Projects
Application and Process
How much money is available in the matching funds pool?
A funding pool will be available to match first-time or doubled previous gifts in this field to organizations and projects that strengthen organizations and projects which strategically further women’s empowerment in the North American Jewish community.
What is the ratio of matching funds to the gift?
Qualifying gifts ranging from $25,000 to $150,000 will be considered for a 1:1 match, with the flexibility to fund less than 100% of requested funds. The maximum match for a single gift is $150,000; individual gifts greater than $150,000 are eligible to receive a maximum of $150,000 in matching funds. For example, a new gift of $200,000 could be matched with $150,000 from the funding pool, generating $350,000 for the organization or project.
What is considered an organization or project that strategically furthers women’s empowerment in the North American Jewish community?
For the purposes of this Matching Grant Initiative, eligible organizations and projects are those that work to create new tools, platforms, and models for women’s empowerment. Programs should seek to:

Are there specific desirability criteria?
Yes. Learn more about the desirability criteria by clicking here.
Can an eligible organization or project receive more than one gift as part of this Matching Grant Initiative? Is there a maximum amount of funds that an individual organization or project may receive?
Yes. An organization or project may be eligible to receive multiple matches of gifts from separate individual donors, up to $150,000 (the minimum amount of each individual gift must be $25,000). $150,000 is the maximum amount that any one organization may receive in matching gifts from this Matching Grant Initiative.
Will anything be required of the organization or project once they are awarded the matching funds?
Yes. As a stipulation of receiving funds, organizations participating in the Matching Grant Initiative must commit to answering a brief set of evaluative questions in the form of a short survey annually for three years after receiving funds to measure the Initiative’s impact.
I am a donor interested in participating in this Matching Grant Initiative. How do I know if I am eligible?
You are eligible to apply for matching funds if you meet ANY of the three criteria* below:
All gifts must be pledged on or after June 27, 2018, and paid in full no later than March 1, 2019, in order to be eligible.
Additionally, having a grant matched is a benefit of membership in the Jewish Funders Network. Donors must agree to become members of the Jewish Funders Network if your application is approved. Donors not already JFN members will be contacted by JFN to discuss the benefits of membership. Learn more here.

How do I apply?
Applications may be submitted through the online application form only and are due by November 16, 2018. If extenuating circumstances prevent you from filling out the application form online, please contact us.
Applications will require specific information from donors about funding history and from the grantee organization or project. JFN encourages donors and organizations to work together to prepare this information. JFN staff will schedule phone conversations with all donors to introduce the donor to JFN, confirm eligibility for this program, and learn more about the membership services JFN offers.

Yes, multiple applications will be considered (but not necessarily funded).
What information will the application require about the organization or project being supported?

How do I know if a gift is eligible?
Gifts are eligible if they are either first-time gifts or doubled previous gifts to the field of women’s empowerment. Gifts must be given after June 27, 2018, to be eligible for this Matching Grant Initiative.
For more information visit Eligibility.
Eligible gifts must be cash (checks or wire transfers). Illiquid stocks, annuities, Israel Bonds, or other slowly maturing instruments are not allowed.
NOTE: We cannot match gifts that are made in the form of tangible goods such as Torah scrolls, land, computer equipment or any other items given in place of cash.
I am not based in North America. Is my gift eligible for this Matching Grant Initiative?
Yes, gifts from donors outside North America are eligible to be matched.
Will all eligible gifts be matched?
Not necessarily. All eligible gifts will be subject to a review process by a review committee. Matching funds will be awarded based upon eligibility and desirability criteria.
Can gifts be earmarked for a particular program or purpose?
Yes. Gifts to Jewish organizations that are creating or continuing a program related to women’s empowerment are eligible for a matching grant.
What if a gift is not awarded matching funds?
There are many organizations working in the Jewish community in this field, and we thus anticipate that there will be some donors whose gifts will not be awarded matching funds. While we certainly hope that you will make the proposed gift if matching funds are not awarded, we understand that some donors might choose not to pay their gifts in the absence of the matching fund’s award. If payment of your pledge is contingent on the award of matching funds, please do not submit payment before receiving notification of the review committee’s decision.
Does the gift have to be paid all at once?
No, but all payments must be received by the NGO no later than March 1, 2019. Instructions on how to submit proof of payment will be included in the grant notice.
